Secret House Vineyards

Secret House Vineyards were initially planted in 1972 to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. The varieties do especially well in the gentle coast range of the Southern Willamette Valley, adding to the rich complexity of the excellent award winning Pinot Noirs produced by Secret House. Produced in small lots we strive for varietal character that delivers a full and exciting tasting experience. The vineyard itself has a special character from the terroir that makes Secret House wines unique. The vineyard is planted on Salkum Silt soil at an elevation of 350 feet. The clay based soil and cool climate, being only 44 miles form the Pacific Ocean, result in low vigor and late ripening. The nature of the growing site and soil conditions necessitate yields of one and a half tons to two tons per acre to achieve a fully mature crop with rich Pinot Noir flavors. With a typical crop yield of around two tons per acre, we are able to produce fruit with excellent berry size for wine making. Given the quality of the fruit it was our decision to make a full extracted Pinot Noir. On average, our grapes come in at 22.3 brix, 3.25 ph, and T/A at 8.8. Primary fermentation is with burgorouge and prisse de mousse yeast. Peak temperature in the fermenters containing burgorouge reach around 89 degrees. Others reach around 90 degrees. Total fermentation time around 10 days. Malolactic fermentation is introduced with Oregon State University malo-culture three days before the culmination of primary fermentation. The juice is then transferred to French oak barrels for 15 months. Barrel age ranges from new to 5 years old.
