Gordon Brothers Cellars

Like many of the finest ideas, the inspiration for Gordon Brothers Family Vineyard sprung from a simple observation. Potato farmer Jeff Gordon noted that Washington State’s bountiful Columbia Valley shared the same latitude as Bordeaux. A student of agriculture, Jeff studied the local microclimate and the rich volcanic soil and became convinced that, if properly cultivated, the Columbia Valley was capable of producing excellent wines. With growing confidence, Jeff sought out the expertise of Walt Clore, the “Father of Washington Wine.” Together the two inspected a 200-acre parcel of sagebrush-covered land near the confluence of the Snake and Columbia Rivers. Walt strongly approved of the land that would soon become Gordon Brothers Family Vineyard. Together, brothers Jeff and Bill Gordon planted their first few acres of chardonnay grapes back in 1980. At the time, there were 19 wineries in Washington. The Gordons quickly fell in love with the camaraderie of the small, but remarkably supportive winemaking community. However, the helpfulness of his genial neighbors did not stop Jeff from bucking the local obsession with planting only white varietals, primarily Riesling. Still confident in his initial premise that the Columbia Valley held profound geographic similarities with Bordeaux, Jeff knew that red grapes could succeed. Since the release of its inaugural 138 case lot of chardonnay in 1985, Gordon Brothers has remained true to a core set of values. First among these is the conviction that quality always takes precedent over quantity. Artisan farmers, the Gordon Brothers proudly put their name on every bottle, and new challenges set by the winery are always measured against the yardstick of consistency. Now, over twenty years later, Gordon Brothers is a leader in the Washington winemaking boom. Crafting wines from an exceptional piece of land, the Gordon Brothers portfolio of estate wines has grown to include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, late harvest Gewürztraminer, Syrah, and their highly acclaimed flagship red, “Tradition” (an opulent blend of the red grapes produced on the Estate). Most recently, Gordon Brothers unveiled their “Katie’s Vineyard” Sauvignon Blanc, named after Jeff and his wife Vicki’s daughter. Along the way, there have been a few changes. In 1998 Jeff’s brother Bill retired. That same year a new winery was built on the vineyard that greatly centralized all aspects of the winemaking process. In August of 2005, winemaker John Gabriel joined the team promising a new era of excellence for the future of Gordon Brothers wines.
