Featured Varietal

Clinton

This relatively unknown American hybrid, derived from Vitis riparia and labrusca, is still grown in some vineyards in the northeastern United States and a few acres in northeast Italy (although it is not a permitted variety). Clinton is a hardy vine with good disease resistance, and notably is immune to phylloxera. The vine yields dark-skinned berries with good acidity, and produces deeply-colored wines with a distinctively ‘foxy’ flavor.

Featured Winery

Cloud View Vineyards

The area called Pritchard Hill lies in the Vaca Mountains just east of the valley floor vineyards of Rutherford and Oakville, and south east of Lake Hennessey (constructed in 1946). Although well known for its vineyards (including Cloud View, Chappellet, Martin, Bryant Family, Harrison, Long Family, Colgin, and David Arthur), Pritchard Hill is not an official AVA. The USGS topographic map labels a precise point as Pritchard Hill but now the name refers to the general area. Interestingly, the USGS point is not on the summit, about 1500 ft.elevation, but on a slope-platform at about 650 ft. In the 1870s, when the Pritchard family grew grapes here, Lake Hennessey did not exist. From the floor of Conn Valley (now at the bottom of the lake) the “Hill” probably seemed higher. The Pritchard’s neighbors in the 19th century, the Conns and the Sages, also grew grapes in the valley and left their names on today’s landmarks—Conn Dam and Sage Canyon Road.
