Featured Winery

Sarah's Vineyard

Sarah's Vineyard was founded in 1978 in an area that has a history of fine wines dating back to the nineteenth century. A change of ownership in 2001 brought a new winemaking team that remains dedicated to crafting small lots of wine that fully express the unique character of our area. The winery's eight acres of estate vineyards are evenly planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with small blocks of Roussanne and Viognier coming into production over the next few years. Situated in the Hecker Pass between the western Santa Clara Valley and the Pacific Ocean, the summertime climactic conditions are driven by the Pacific's proximity, providing cool afternoon onshore winds to ameliorate the valley heat. This afternoon and evening cooling extends fruit ripening through a long growing season, resulting in grapes that fully express the unique nature of our site. Estate wines are produced from vineyards having an average age of 20 years. The new owners immediately planted more Pinot Noir, carefully choosing a mix of four Dijon clones to provide a complex blend of grapes at harvest. Yields on the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay average 2 tons per acre. No pesticides are used in the vineyards, and most of the vineyard maintenance is done by hand. Since 2001, we have focused our efforts on small local vineyards, searching for those plots where the grower's care can be combined with frequent consultation with our winemaking team. We believe that great wines require great grapes. Finding local sources allows us to explore the growing practices and varietals that are best suited to our unique location. Recognizing that Sarah's Vineyard has already proven to provide great Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, our vineyard search has included those Burgundian varieties. We also believe that the area has great promise for cool-climate Rhône grapes, including Syrah, Roussanne, and Viognier. In 2004, our Syrah was sourced from four local growers. We pledge to continue our search for superior growers of cool-climate grapes in our area. The winery is small, with annual production typically between 2500 and 3000 cases. Staying at this small level allows us to focus our efforts at making the best wine possible from our great grapes. Attention to detail during the wine's progression from grape to bottle is at the core of our efforts. We recognize that the craft of winemaking involves caring for the wine as it evolves, rather than manipulating it into a preconceived style. Our wines are aged in 60-gallon French oak barrels. Each barrel is monitored during the course of aging, and topped by hand on a weekly basis. The winery's small size allows us to make decisions based on individual barrels rather than blends. Both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are typically aged sur lies, with minimal intervention before bottling. Syrah and Merlot are usually racked a few times before bottling, with the goal of bottling all our red wines without filtration or fining.
