Thistle Meadow Winery Located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Thistle Meadow Winery offers individualized tours of our family-owned winery. Our tours include tastings of wines made from grapes grown around the world. We create a wide variety of red, white, and blush wines, ranging in taste from sweet to dry. Our wines are hand-crafted in small batches to ensure the highest quality. Two of our wines - Pinot Grigio and Bergamais - took home Gold Medals from the Mid-Atlantic Southeastern Wine Competition, held at the Dixie Classic Fair in October 2004. Our Vieux Chateau du Roi took a Silver Medal in a similar competition in 2003. Hours: Mon-Fri, 10 am-4 pm Winter, 10 am-5 pm Summer; Sat by appointment only.

Directions from the Triad: The winery is only 1 hour and a quarter from Winston-Salem, and 2 hours from Greensboro. Take I-40 West to Winston-Salem; then take US 421 North; Follow US 421 North to I-77 North; Follow I-77 North for approximately 9 miles, then take exit #83 (Hwy. 21 N - Sparta); Continue on Hwy. 21 North for another 28 miles or so until you reach Sparta; At the second stoplight, take a left onto Hwy. 18 South towards Laurel Springs Follow Hwy. 18 South for approximately 11 miles, then take a left onto Elk Knob Road (SR 1143) at Jct. 113; Follow Elk Knob Road for about 0.3 mile; take the first driveway to the right. Look for signs.

  Bald Head Red
This delicious full-bodied red was named after a local landmark known as Bald Head Mountain. A robust dry wine with a hint of plums and earthy notes, it offers a slight oak finish.
Made in the style of the great Beaujolais wines, this perky young wine is also made from the juice of the Gamay grape. Won a gold medal at Dixie Classic Fair in 2004.
  Bluebird Song
You'll be floating on a breeze when you try this blend of blueberry flavor and Shiraz.
  Bonny Black
This dark, rich, flavorful blend of black currants and Merlot makes a wonderfully full-bodied sweet wine. To the Scotch-Irish folks who first settled in this part of North Carolina, the word "bonny" means good... and boy is it ever! Serve chilled.
Patterned after the great Burgundy wines, this wine offers a soft, light, fruity, easy-drinking taste, emphasizing fresh berry flavors.
  Cabernet Franc
Quickly gaining popularity with the "dry red" crowd, this oaky and fruity plum-colored wine offers mild tannins and a smooth finish.
  Cabernet Merlot
This blend of 70% Cabernet and 30% Merlot comes from grapes grown in Australia. The Merlot softens the tannins in the Cabernet, providing a smooth and gentle finish. Lightly oaked, with the fullness of ripe berries.
  Cabernet Sauvignon
A full-bodied intense red with cherry - currant flavor, this wine benefits from aging in oak. Wonderfully matched with Filet Mignon or other fine cut of beef.
  Cabernet Shiraz
Another wine made from Australian grapes, this blend of 70% Cabernet and 30% Shiraz offers a rich, deep red color and a full taste, nicely rounded with oak.
A full-bodied spicy and deeply colored Chilean red wine, with flavors of black cherry and plum. It offers a hint of anise, and a lightly toasted vanilla finish.
  Chardonnay / Semillon
This wonderful white blend offers honey and oak flavors coupled with the buttery texture of Chardonnay. Goes great with poultry, fish, or seafood.
  Chenin Blanc
Refreshingly crisp and dry, with subtle floral notes and a hint of fruit and honey.
  Double Black
This wine gets its name from its ingredients - sweet black cherries and Pinot Noir - and is not to be confused with double black diamond runs on the ski slopes in nearby Banner Elk. Serve chilled.
  French Colombard
Subtle notes of honey and fruit make this a light, dry, and floral wine. Just a touch of oak!
  Gap Civil White
A sweet Riesling wine that's been flavored with tart, crisp green apples - a unique blend that you simply must try! Gap Civil White gets its name from the old name of the county seat. Serve chilled.
Rich with the character of tropical fruit, this easy-drinking white made from grapes grown in Germany goes best with spicy foods.
  Horse Stomp Red
The taste and aroma of raspberries is loud and clear when it's blended with White Zinfandel. This wine was named for a small community in Alleghany County. Try this with dark chocolate! Serve chilled.
  Italian Stud
Specially formulated by your wine master, this strong red is often confused with liquid Viagra™. Thistle Meadow Winery assums no responsibility for sudden passionate desires.   Johannisberg Riesling
The grapes that make this well-balanced and fruity dry wine hail from Germany, offering hints of peach and apricot.
  Lucky Black
This wine is a blackberry flavored Merlot and is one of the sweetest red wines we offer. Named after our dog "Lucky", it is best served chilled.
The grapes for this famous wine hail from Argentina. Enjoy a soft, rich textured wine with the taste of ripe plums, cherries, currants, and red berries. The nose offers just a hint of vanilla. Food pairings are beef and lamb.
Soft, full flavor laced with oak to enhance fruitiness. Compare this wine with your "store bought" harsh Merlots!
  New River White
Soft and refreshing with hints of honeyed fruit. It is a real "sleeper" in taste. Patterned after the German Piesporter, this grape was grown in Australia.
  Nile Red
A spicy Cabernet flavor, wed to a sweet fruit Shiraz, softened by Merlot - This wine is velvety smooth, just like the section of the New River for which it was named.
  Old Vine Zinfandel
This well-rounded, full-bodied yet mellow Zinfandel was made from grapes grown on a 100-year-old vine in California.
  Peden White
This peach-flavored Chardonnay is a hit with the summer sippin' crowd because it's lighter (only 8% alcohol) and refreshing. The aroma is so big, you'd almost expect to find peach fuzz on the wine glass! Served chilled.
  Pinot Grigio
Rapidly becoming our best-selling white wine at Thistle Meadow Winery, our Pinot Grigio took a gold medal at the 2004 Dixie Classic Fair. Medium-bodied, lighter colored wine with delicate floral notes. Crisp and flavorful, it has tropical fruit aromas & hints of green apple, melon & citrus. The finish is soft and fruity, yet assertive and dry.
  Ruisseau Blanc
Made from the Chardonnay grape, this lightly oaked white wine provides a crisp, clean finish.
  Sauvignon Blanc
This classic dry wine offers grassy and herbal notes with a green fruit character. Refreshing and versatile!
A rich, dark and robust red, with flavors of warm berries, fresh pepper, and oak.
  Stone Mountain Red
Named for the giant granite dome found on the southeast boundary of Alleghany County, this blend of Chianti and cranberry flavors is a little less sweet and more tangy than its sister-in-wine Whitehead Red. Hike on up to more flavor!
  Stone Mountain White
A wonderful melange of mango, guava, pineapple, and banana flavors. We call this wine a cheap trip to the beach! Serve ice cold.
  Sweet Holler White
One of our top-selling wines, this kiwi-flavored Gewürztraminer literally gushes with fresh fruit flavor. Serve chilled to maximize the taste. This wine was named for a small community just north of Laurel Springs, NC.

  Thistle White

  Topia Red
Patterned after the great red wines from the Valpolicella region of Italy, this medium-bodied dry wine has a fruity bouquet and rich texture.
  Turkey Knob Red
Luscious, rich and velvety wine made in the Chianti style from the grapes of sunny Italy, this red gets its name from a colorful Alleghany hilltop near Piney Creek.
  Turkey Knob White
This is our version of White Merlot. The skins of the Merlot grape are in contact with the grape juice for only a short while, giving a salmon color to the wine. If you like White Zinfandel, you will immediately fall for this one!
  Twin Oaks Red
When you mix strawberries with White Zinfandel, you get this terrific sweet wine that was named after a small community just west of Sparta. Serve chiled.
Just a hint of fruit and almonds gives this delicate wine a crisp clean taste. This wine matches well with all types of poultry and pasta with cream sauces.
  Vieux Chateau du Roi
Watch out! This big red wine offers a great berry and cherry aroma. Made in the style of Chateauneuf du Pape, this Syrah blend (with a little Mourvedre) won a silver medal at the Dixie Classic Fair in 2003.
Styled as a classic Italian Amarone - platinum rated.
  White Zinfandel
A sweet Blush for those just beginning to appreciate wine. One of our best-selling wines, this slightly fruity pink-hued light wine is perfect for drinking by itself or with a light meal.
  Whitehead Red
A cranberry-flavored Shiraz, this delightful wine will give you two tastes in one - both sweet and tangy! Very refreshing when served chilled, this wine was named after a small community located between Sparta and Laurel Springs.
