Hall Winery - St. Helena

Hall Winery - St. Helena The Hall winery in St. Helena has a rich and colorful history in the Napa Valley dating back to the 19th century. With its acquisition by Kathryn and Craig Hall in 2003, a new chapter began for the storied winery, one that preserves its place in the annals of Napa Valley wine history yet adds a modern-day dimension of excellence in winemaking and an unparalleled visitor experience. The original stone winery, which still stands on the property today, was built by New England sea captain William Peterson in 1885. The best-known and longest tenured owner was the Napa Valley Cooperative Winery, which, under the direction of renowned winemaker and Napa Valley pioneer Charles Forni, produced 40 percent of all Napa Valley wines in the late 1930s. Today, as Hall, the winery is dedicated to the production of ultra-premium Bordeaux varietal wines from Kathryn and Craig Hall’s vineyards in Napa Valley and Alexander Valley. They have remodeled the tasting room, where visitors can try Hall wines, relax in the arbor-covered courtyards and take in the original works of art and sculpture from the Halls’ collection.

  Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
“This 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon neatly encapsulates the power and potential of this varietal in the Napa Valley within premier vintages. The flavors captured are full-bodied and dense, with an exceptionally rich mouth-feel balanced by a soft, well delineated tannin structure. The nose is packed with intense fruit characters of plum, cassis, and black cherry with notes of earth, a little bit of leather and spice. A little rounder and a bit more polished overall than the 2001 vintage, this wine offers plenty of enjoyment right now, but will no doubt continue to pick up dimension and complexity cellared over the next 3-5 years.”
  Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Our 2003 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is similarly styled to the 2002 vintage and drinkers will once again appreciate the voluminous rush of rich red fruits backed by a supple and refined tannic grip. Again much like the 2001 and 2002 vintages, the 2003 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was created as a blend of several premier vineyards located in diverse microclimates around the valley with the majority of the fruit coming from local hillside or mountain grown spots. Overall production increased significantly this year due to the acquisition of newer vineyard sources coupled with a growing demand for the wine.
  Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2002 Kathryn Hall certainly retains the muscular structure we’ve come to expect from the vineyard, yet comes across much broader and a bit more expansive than the 2001. The fruit is both brawny and lush, remarkably expressive and clearly delineated. Expect a massive wall of deep, plummy fruit matched by generous floral and earthy aromatics, exotic spice, tea and notes of rich, toasted oak. This is indeed a powerful, profound Cabernet that reflects its mountain-grown origins. This wine is drinking so beautifully right now, we would be foolish to suggest laying it aside in the cellar, but for those of you who prefer to defer your gratification, our 2002 will continue to evolve quite nicely over the next 3-10 years.
  Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine captures and combines the heady one-two punch of the 1999 vintage along with the subtle elegance of the 2000. Bold, berry fruit and deep plum flavors are matched by generous floral and earthy aromatics, exotic spice and notes of rich, cedary oak. A powerful, concentrated Cabernet that reflects its mountain-grown origins, with submerged mouth-coating tannins and a vibrantly youthful structure, our 2001 is a vintage that will surely evolve and continue to deliver over the next 8-10 years.
  Merlot Napa Valley
“Our 2002 Merlot is a blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon taken from a number of distinct Napa Valley sites for an incredible compilation that simply sings on the palate. Once again expect a plush, jammy, spice and mocha laden elixir with an added dimension of ?rm acidity and ?ne grain tannins. The aromatics are heady and the ?nish is lengthy, an ethereal wine that’s both amazingly complex yet so easy to enjoy. While this youthful 2002 has a lot going for it right now, it will without a doubt pick up additional layers of heady enjoyment while cellared over the next several years.”
  Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Our 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon highlights the density and power possible in the Napa Valley in premier vintages. The nose is packed with dense fruit characters of blackberry, cassis, and black cherry with subtle notes of earth, leather and cedar. A hint of Cabernet Franc in the blend also adds a subtle floral complexity. The flavors are full-bodied and dense, with an exceptionally rich mouthfeel and round, supple tannin. The power and density of this will allow it to continue to evolve beautifully for many years to come.
  Napa Valley Merlot
Our first bottling of Napa Valley Merlot is the result of carefully chosen fruit from a handful of dynamic local vineyard sites. Crafted in an ultra ripe, fleshy and decidedly opulent style, our Merlot clearly mirrors the amazing growing conditions and overall quality of the vintage in 2001. Contrary to the notion that Merlot itself may often lack a certain punch, this wine provides plenty of depth and backbone with finely integrated tannins matched by a subtle beam of acidity…both of which are nicely framed by massively round fruit flavors. The addition of Cabernet Franc found within serves to heighten and expand on the floral cherry and briary blackberry notes that nearly leap from the glass on first impression. Supple yet lithe, this wine is deceptively ripe, rich and plush while amazingly versatile and food friendly.
  Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley
Hall is pleased to release the alluring 2004 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc. This wine, selected from two premier Napa Valley vineyards shows intense aromas of pink grapefruit, lemons, and honeydew melon. The palate is rich with texture and weight, showing long, lush, fruit ?avors of pear and melon. The wine has wonderfully focused acidity which provides the backbone for the long, refreshing ?nish, a signature of our Sauvignon Blanc program. This racy acidity provides the perfect pairing for a number of summertime dishes, including grilled halibut, sautéed shrimp and shell?sh of all types.
  Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley
Hall is proud to introduce an ultra-radiant Sauvignon Blanc from the 2003 vintage in Napa Valley. 100% Sauvignon Blanc chosen primarily from a single vineyard near Yountville, this wine is marked by gorgeous aromatics of pink grapefruit, lemon peel, bright lime and crisp, stony minerality. Refreshingly light and nimble, the wine gains a bit of weight on the mid-palate, delivering a body of lush, nearly tropical fruit flavors for a long, satisfying finish. The racy acidity provides the perfect foil for a number of summertime dishes, though ideally this wine is best served alongside the season’s finest simmering sea creatures. Entirely enjoyable out on the deck, on the beach or by the pool, this is the perfect sipping wine to see you through the long, lazy days of Summer.
