Introduced in 1988 by American vintners, the name Meritage (a combination of the words merit and heritage) was established to properly denote a well crafted New World red wine whose blended composition contains the traditional Bordeaux varietals. The name Merlot is believed to be derived from the Occitan language spoken in rural areas of southern France. The Occitan word Merlot is translated as young blackbird, an animal whose color is similar to the black fruit produced by Merlot vines. Derived from the Gewürztraminer grape, Traminette was bred in 1965 through the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station at Cornell University.
