  Varietal Series - Riesling
From Friday, February 12, 2010 To Friday, February 12, 2010
Wine education vacation! What a wonderful way to start a romantic weekend in the mountains - take a sophisticated wine class on Friday night in Nevada City (cultural center of the Sierra Foothills), then enjoy Saturday and Sunday exploring the more quaint aspects of town and the spectacular local scenery. Nevada City gets snow, but it is just below the elevation where snow requires specialty gear. Class will cover all the important aromatic white grape varieties (Pinot Gris, Gruner Veltliner, Torrentes) which go so well with West Coast Asian-influenced cuisine. But the major emphasis will be on high-quality Riesling (perfect match for shrimp or Dungeness crab), with older examples from Germany's Mosel Valley, and lime-scented beauties from Australia, and very interesting efforts from cold-climate districts in British Columbia and New York. Class details, on-line registration, and instructor credentials on the website. Note also upcoming single-sessions the second Friday of each month: Zinfandel (March 12); Chardonnay (April 9); and Cabernet (May 14). COST: $65 single; $119 couple

Small Lots Big Wine has partnered with Efrain Barragan of Bourassa Vineyards to bring you the Sibling Rivalry Blind Tasting Series. In the spirit of friendly competition we will be doing monthly blind tastings between Napa and Sonoma wines. Even though we have "experts" as official judges, guests will also have opportunity to blind taste and vote on their favorites. The first of our series features Napa Zin vs. Sonoma Zin. This month, Cabs from both counties face off. We've made some changes for the better. We'll stop all voting at 6:00 p.m., when we take away the voting boxes and reveal the wines at the table. We also have more judges, including some females judges. We've made the event recession friendly, just $10 per person. We will still have cheese and a sweet for sale, but if you want dinner (just $8) you must pre order. A portion of the ticket and food sales goes back to the Rutherford Grange. May the best CAB win! Salud!
