A to Z Wineworks

A to Z Wineworks A to Z Wineworks was started in 2002 by four friends, Oregon wine industry veterans, Deb Hatcher (Eyrie), Bill Hatcher (Domaine Drouhin Oregon), Sam Tannahill (Archery Summit) and Cheryl Francis (Chehalem). The two couples worked in the Hatcher's kitchen to build the original blend honored by Food & Wine magazine as the Best American Pinot Noir under $20. Recognition for their A to Z wines with dependable quality and great value continued and production grew. In 2006, the group welcomed another Oregon wine veteran, Michael Davies, as winemaker, and partnered with Gregg Popovich (Coach of the San Antonio Spurs) to buy REX HILL Vineyards and Winery (established in 1982). A to Z has worked with more than 100 vineyards across the state always offering assistance for sustainability certification that the group expects to be achieved within three years of partnering. Today, A to Z has two viticulturists on staff and uses biodynamic principles to farm all owned or long-leased vineyards. Diverse sourcing across the state mitigates regional weather difficulties and adds complexity and depth to the one wine of each variety that is blended in any vintage. Additionally, A to Z has more collective Oregon winemaking experience than any other winery, experience that can make a difference in difficult vintages. A to Z remains true to the dual mission of offering Aristocratic Wines at Democratic Prices blending one cuvee each vintage of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris that deliver the Essence of Oregon. A commitment to excellence is matched by a belief in fair value and sustainability in business as well as farming and a drive to offer the highest quality for the best value. A to Z Oregon Pinot Noir has twice been named to Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines of the year; A to Z Oregon Pinot Gris is a perennial Best Buy; and A to Z Oregon Chardonnay is America's Best Selling Oregon Chardonnay.

  A to Z Oregon Chardonnay
A to Z Oregon Chardonnay shows all the power of the 2012 vintage yet retains the bright steely edge that cool climate Oregon Chardonnay is known for. Apparent immediately are aromas like kiwi, tangerine, white peach and quince followed by deeper, richer aromas like honey, beeswax and melon. On the palate, the wine is equally complex and inviting. A juicy attack with great minerality leads to flavors that mirror the aromatics while yet more layers, like pear and toasted coconut, arise on the mid-palate. The concentration is balanced by firm acidity that gives the wine vitality and persistence with a long lingering note of clean wet stones.
A to Z Oregon Pinot Gris
The 2012 A to Z Pinot Gris has intense aromatics of lime blossom, nectarine, tangerine, melon, wet stone and guava that build into aromatics of nutmeg, Bing cherries and kiwi. The palate is concentrated, ripe and succulent with wonderful lush fruit and mineral notes. The concentration is framed by ripe acidity that gives lift to the wine as it moves to the mid-palate. The flavors on the mid-palate echo the aromas with a deeper note of honey. The wine moves seamlessly into a finish that goes on for some time before finishing crisply. The lasting impression of the wine is great purity and intensity balanced by wonderful juiciness and succulence.
A to Z Oregon Pinot Noir
The 2012 A to Z Pinot Noir invites with vibrant aromas of juicy berries, cherries, lavender and violets, evolving to clove, game, smoke and cherry tobacco. A succulent, focused attack has flavors of blue and red fruits, flowers and earth, then deepens with hints of mocha, gingerbread, green tea and cacao. A very ripe tannic structure is balanced by perfect acidity, giving shape and elegance to the concentration of lush fruit. A beautiful, complex, forward wine results, walking a tightrope between richness and elegance. Built for midterm aging, the captivating A to Z Pinot Noir once again sets the standard for the superior 2012 Pinot Noir vintage in Oregon.
  A to Z Oregon Riesling
The 2012 A to Z Riesling has fresh aromas of wet stone, lime, white flowers, tangerine and ginger. The primary rush of aromatics gains complexity with aromas of white pepper, quince, white currants and raisins and lemon sorbet. Focused fruit (lime, passion fruit and guava) and mineral flavors echo the aromas on the palette. As the wine moves into the mid-palate the strong structure takes over with a hint of residual sugar adding balance and depth to the wine. The finish is extremely long, succulent and clean with lingering flavors of lime marmalade and minerals. Complete, complex and beautiful, this wine will gain in age and complexity over the next ten years, but is already drinking great now. A versatile food wine, it pairs exceptionally well with spicy foods which play nicely against the dynamic layers of this Riesling.
A to Z Oregon Rosé Wine
The A to Z Rose has bright and vibrant aromas of wild strawberries, red currants, peach, watermelon, cherries, raspberries and hibiscus with hints of rosemary and thyme. In the mouth, the juicy attack is a riot of red fruit and melon flavors that move into a mid-palate that is bright and rich all at once. The wine ultimately finishes crisp and clean with lingering flavors of strawberries and lavender. Pure enjoyment! A to Z Rose is made with intention from grape to glass.
