ZD Wines

ZD Wines Producing world-class wines was the vision of two former aerospace engineers who in pursuit of their dream launched ZD Wines. The plan was to produce wines similar to those from the renowned Burgundy region of France using the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay winegrape varieties. In 1968, Norman de Leuze and Gino Zepponi pooled their resources of $3,000 apiece and applied for a winery permit. At that time, there had not been a winery permit issued in Sonoma County for nearly 20 years. The permit was issued in 1969. Norman and Gino rented a small farm building in the Carneros region of Sonoma County. They purchased winegrapes, some 50-gallon oak barrels and a redwood vat. Three hundred cases of Pinot Noir and a small amount of White Riesling represented ZD's first commercial vintage in 1969. The grapes were purchased from the Winery Lake Vineyard, which had been planted a few years earlier by René di Rosa. ZD's 1969 Pinot Noir carries the historical significance of being the first wine to have a Carneros designation on the label. It states, "Made in Sonoma from grapes grown in the Carneros region of Napa." The Chardonnay winegrapes from Winery Lake Vineyard were not in production until 1971, which is the first vintage of ZD Chardonnay.

  2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
The grapes for this Cabernet Sauvignon were sourced from several small, low-yielding Napa Valley vineyards, each with its own unique “terroir”, giving us a varied palette of flavors and textures to work with in producing this wine. Aged for two years in American oak barrels, this wine is drinking wonderfully now and will age gracefully for many years. With aromas of crushed blackberries, red plum, cassis and tobacco, this wine is layered with complexity from start to finish. full bodied on the palate, the core of ripe fruit is enveloped by velvety tannins and the oak is integrated beautifully, with hints of vanilla, toasted nuts and spice that linger on the long, rich finish.
  2006 Chardonnay, California
ZD’s 2006 Chardonnay delivers traditional “ZD Style”. Our pursuit of richness and balance is achieved through careful selection of quality vineyards from California’s esteemed cool growing regions including Napa, Sonoma, Monterey, and Santa Barbara counties. A unique winemaking approach of cold barrel fermentation in toasted American oak barrels gives this wine a deep opulence with aromas of fresh tropical fruit and a hint of vanilla and coconut. No malo-lactic fermentation results in a preservation of crisp acidity that gives the wine a clean finish in addition to a lingering aftertaste. Drink this wine now to enjoy the fruit forward characters or allow some bottle aging to develop an impressive depth and complexity. Enjoy! -Chris Pisani, Winemaker
  2006 Pinot Noir, Carneros
This vintage marks an important milestone for ZD Pinot Noir, with 100% of the fruit coming exclusively from Jim Haire’s organically certified vineyard in the Carneros region of Napa Valley. Jim, a longtime ZD Pinot Noir grower decided (with gentle prodding!) to begin farming our two blocks organically in 2002. Both blocks are planted to the highly regarded Dijon clones, the smaller 13 acre block to clone 667 and the remaining 16 acres to clones 777, 115 and Pommard. In keeping with our motto, Quality, Consistency & Style, our winemaking approach remains the same. We gently de-stem the fruit and ferment it in small open top fermentors. Hand punchdowns of the cap every 6 hours during fermentation ensures a gentle extraction of color and tannins, and 10 months of rest in 100% French Oak barrels create a wine with depth, balance and elegance. Dark ruby in color, with aromas of ripe cherries, plum and rhubarb, this wine is classic Carneros Pinot Noir. Hints of cedar, vanilla and toasted nuts lead into a full, rich palate of flavors and silky tannin.
  Abacus
Abacus is our ultimate Cabernet Sauvignon, combining the best qualities of an aged wine with the best of a youthful wine, together in one sumptuous mouthful. Incredible depth and complexity along with a deep, lingering finish are backed by an intense fruit character. The concept was born on a de Leuze family retreat, when ZD Winemaster, Robert and his brother, Brett were enjoying a wonderful old Cabernet Sauvignon. They agreed that the deep complexity and subtle nuances that develop in older wines are always accompanied by a loss of fruit. What if there was a way to blend the elegance of an older Cabernet Sauvignon with the intensity of fruit found in a younger wine?
  Reserve Chardonnay, Napa Valley
This 100% Napa Valley Chardonnay is a blend from two of our favorite vineyards located in the coolest part of the Napa Valley, one of which is the dry farmed, organically certified deLeuze Family Estate Vineyard in the Carneros. The other vineyard is the Soscol Vineyard which sits just outside of the Carneros appellation, but enjoys the same proximity to the San Pablo Bay which gives us the long, cool growing season that Chardonnay thrives in. The fruit was all hand harvested at optimal maturity and barrel fermented at 46-48°F in our cellar. No malo-lactic fermentation further ensures a perfect balance of forward fruit and crisp, natural acidity. This wine was aged for 15 months in American oak barrels, selected for their delicacy, and bottled in December 2005. In the aroma, pineapple, pear and sweet vanilla mingle with subtle notes of lime, coconut and toast. This wine is full bodied and rich on the palate, with more tropical pineapple and apricot flavors that integrate beautifully with the spicy American oak. The fruit lingers throughout the incredibly long finish. Enjoy!!! Robert deLeuze, Winemaster
