San Juan Vineyards

San Juan Vineyards A memorable wine-tasting destination, San Juan Vineyards, is our island’s only producing vineyard and winery. Our tasting room and gift shop fill a 1895 one-room schoolhouse located three miles from Friday Harbor on Roche Harbor road. Browse through the gift and wine-related items, taste some wine at the tasting bar, then enjoy a glass of your favorite on our sunny deck. New releases are coming out regularly; right now we are proud of many new varietals -- 2002 Cabernet-Merlot and 2003 Pinot Gris. This is the first release from San Juan Vineyards for both the Cab-Merlot and the Pinot Gris. The Cab-Merlot will be featured during the theater season at the 5th Avenue in Seattle. The Pinot Gris has been showcased at many recent tastings with the fruit coming from the Columbia Gorge appellation.

Directions
We are three miles north of Friday Harbor on Roche Harbor Road, and easy to find. Follow signs for Roche Harbor Resort; as you round a corner three miles out, we are very visable - watch for the schoolhouse and chapel on the right. From Roche Harbor Resort, take Roche Harbor Road toward Friday Harbor; we are on left about 6 miles down the road

  Cabernet-Merlot
Our Cabernet-Merlot has been a popular blend year after year. This blend has burnt dark cherry on the nose with plum, tea and cherry on the palate. The finish is oaky with a nice splash of chocolate. This is a great, consistent food partner to have around the house for the grilling season and a nice Pot Roast in the Fall.
  Cabernet-Syrah
We blended the 2004 Cabernet-Sauvignon and Syrah to make a lively, jammy wine. The Cabernet-Syrah is upfront with lots of fruit flavor – blackberry, plum and bing cherry; the fruit mingles to a cherry and oak finish. The Cab-Syrah is enjoyable now or can be aged for three to five years adding interest to the finish and structure.
  Chardonnay
With aromas of honey, apple and lemon custard, this Wente Clone Chardonnay has hints of pear and apple on the palate. The finish has a nice bit of oak but not overpowering; the fruit integrates nicely with the oak. Our 2004 Chardonnay was barrel fermented with naturally occurring yeasts using 30% new French oak barrels. The fruit source is Kestrel View Estates, and this is a Wente clone Chardonnay.

This Chardonnay makes an excellent food partner for Poultry dishes and also a more meaty seafood like Halibut or Salmon. I like this Chardonnay paired with Chicken Fettuccine and a Caesar Salad on the side.
  Chardonnay, Celilo Vineyards
This replaces our previous Reserve Chardonnay with fruit exclusively from renowned Celilo Vineyards of the Columbia Gorge. This is barrel-fermented using 30% new French oak.
  Gewurztraminer
This is a classic Gewurztraminer with hints of peach, apple and spice on the palate finishing with a touch of grapefruit. It is a bit sweeter than our previous vintages, but is very characteristic in style. The fruit was fermented using Ausmahausen yeast. And, the fruit came from Kiona Vineyards on Red Mountain in the Columbia Valley. It is excellent with shellfish, as a luncheon wine and also goes great with a Pear Tarte or Apple Pie. Think of this Gewurztraminer as you prepare your holiday meals especially at Thanksgiving. The Gewurztraminer won a GOLD MEDAL at the prestigious Washington Wine Competition in June, 2006.
  Madeleine Angevine
From our Estate Vineyard seen as you drive by, we offer our Madeleine Angevine wine. This light, white varietal has hints of pear and apricot and a bit of melon and peach on the palate. The finish is that of crisp fruit.
  Merlot
A very popular Merlot with a fruity nose and tastes of cherry, blackberry and vanilla. There is an introduction of caramelized cherry pie and strawberry flavors on the palate making this a great Merlot for pastas and roasted meats.
  Pinot Gris
Wild honey, apple and pear. Soft pineapple in a lingering finish. Offers best flavors when served slightly chilled - not cold.
  Reserve Merlot
2 Bronze Medals!! Aromas of dark black cherry and wild rosebuds lead to flavors of black cherry with a peppery, smoky cinnamon finish. Ready to enjoy!
  Sangiovese
A smooth and lingering wine with lively strawberry and spice flavors. This wine starts with a nice nose of blackberry, cherry and vanilla. The finish is a great combination of tannins, fruit and a nice hint of oak.
  Semillion-Chardonnay
Tangerine nose, creamy apple flavors and a tropical fruit finish. Hints of honey and oak.
  Siegerrebe Estate
From our Estate Vineyard seen as you drive along Roche Harbor Road, our Siegerrebe vineyard is in view. This interesting, light varietal has hints of pear and apple with spice and a little hint of Grapefruit on the finish. It is touted as a cousin to Gewurztraminer.
  Siegerrebe Puget Sound
Pear and honeysuckle bouquet with honeydew melon and pear on the palate. Lightly sweet, clean and refreshing grapefruit finish. A brunch/garden wine.
  Syrah
This wine is luscious!! It opens with aromas of cherries, smoke leather and red licorice with enticing flavors of black cherry and chocolate and a nice hint of oak on the finish that lingers. This is mouth filling and an excellent partner for grilled meats.
  Viognier-Roussanne
Pineapple on the nose with fruit and citrus on the palate. A hint of honey and neutral oak on the finish. Delightful!
