Chateau des Charmes

Chateau des Charmes Winemaster Paul-Michel Bosc a French Winegrower came to Canada and started his family vineyard in 1978. The winery has 240 acres under cultivation in Niagara-on-the-Lake, claiming to be the first in Canada to plant a vineyard exclusively to vifis vinifera. Chateau Des Charmes has a good web site*. Madame Bosc plays an important role in the winery , as a teacher by profession, she devotes much of her attention to producing a highly educational and enjoyable winery tour. The Globe and Mail once commented that " Château des Charmes boasts one of the best tours any oenophile is ever likely to take, Napa Valley and Champagne districts included.

  2000 Late Harvest Riesling, Estate Bottled
Château des Charmes Late Harvest Riesling is a rich and flavourful dessert wine. Exuding aromas of citrus and tropical fruit, it is full and sweet on the palate with excellent balancing acidity. This estate bottled wine is excellent to drink now, but will continue to develop in the bottle for many years. 1,225 cases produced.
  2000 Riesling Icewine, Paul Bosc Estate Vineyard
This famous dessert wine is produced exclusively from the Paul Bosc Estate Vineyard. The fruit is harvested in the winter at a maximum temperature of -10 degrees Celsius or colder when it is frozen solid on the vine. The frozen grapes are then pressed and the resultant nectar exudes aromas of apricot and honey with a fine overall balance between fruit flavours, sweetness and acidity. Icewine is a gift of winter to be enjoyed on its own or served with dessert.
  2000 Vidal Icewine
Château des Charmes Icewine is produced from 100% Vidal grapes and is a wonderfully sweet nectar fermented with wild yeasts. It exudes aromas of honey and apricots with a beautiful balance between fruit, sweetness and acidity. 1,647 cases produced.
  2001 Auxerrois, Estate Bottled
Auxerrois is a straw coloured, medium bodied dry white wine possessing a bouquet of citrus fruit and melon. It is soft on the palate with a complex flavour and finish. 2,523 cases produced.
  2001 Riesling TBA, Paul Bosc Estate Vineyard
Harvested by hand at an amazing 37 brix, this totally botrytis affected Riesling is a dramatically intense dessert wine that exudes aromas of honey and tropical fruit. With 173 g / L of residual sugar, the wine is full and sweet on the palate with excellent balancing acidity. Riesling grapes were individually bunch selected from a single vineyard block within the Paul Bosc Estate Vineyard, the Bosc family’s home vineyard well known for its low yields, superb terroir and advanced viticultural techniques. Only three times in its 25 year history has Château des Charmes produced a late harvest wine from totally botrytis affected grapes. To drink now but patient collectors can expect the wine to age 10 - 15 years in the bottle.

  2002 Merlot, St. David's Bench Vineyard
Château des Charmes Merlot, St. David's Bench Vineyard undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation and is aged for one year in French oak barrels. It has a purplish ruby colour and a bouquet of black cherry and dark chocolate. It is a rich, full-bodied wine tasting of cherry and cassis with a silky finish. This wine is very ageworthy and will continue to develop for 5-10 years after bottling. 496 cases produced.
  2003 'Silver Label' Cabernet
Château des Charmes 'Silver Label' Cabernet is an easy drinking, medium-bodied red table wine. It has a rich bouquet of black currant and leather and is very smooth on the palate with an earthy black currant flavour.
  Aligoté, Estate Bottled V.Q.A.
Château des Charmes Winemaster Paul Bosc was the first North American winegrower to import the Aligoté grape variety from Burgundy. By restricting the yield in the vineyard he is able to produce a dry, white wine with hints of green apples and butter. Crisp with excellent fruit concentration.
  Brut Sparkling Wine
Vinified in the classic Méthode Traditionnelle, this internationally acclaimed and medal winning sparkling wine has been bottle fermented and bottle aged on the yeast for a minimum of three years. It is a classic blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, dry and biscuity, with a creamy texture. 1,960 cases produced.
  Cabernet Franc, St. David's Bench Vineyard V.Q.A.
Château des Charmes Cabernet Franc, St. David's Bench Vineyard undergoes temperature controlled fermentation and is aged for one year in French oak barrels. It is a ruby coloured, complex wine with flavours of raspberry and pipe tobacco. Although this wine is ready to drink, it will continue to develop in the bottle for five to 10 years. 499 cases produced.
  Cabernet Sauvignon, Paul Bosc Estate Vineyard V.Q.A.
Paul Bosc Estate Vineyard undergoes temperature controlled fermentation and is aged for one year in French oak barrels. The resulting wine has a deep ruby colour and a bouquet of cassis and bell pepper. It is full bodied and complex, possessing classic varietal flavours. This wine is ready to drink now, but will continue to develop in the bottle for 5-10 years.
  Cabernet-Merlot V.Q.A.
Château des Charmes Cabernet-Merlot is a classically styled blend of 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Cabernet Franc and 31% Merlot. It is a medium-bodied red wine with flavours of spicy bell pepper, raspberry and cassis. It is ready to drink now but will develop with a few years in the bottle.

  Chardonnay Musqué, Estate Bottled
Chardonnay Musqué is a unique clone of Chardonnay that was pioneered in the Niagara Peninsula by Château des Charmes’ founder Paul Bosc. 2004 Chardonnay Musqué is pale gold in colour with a wonderful aromatic bouquet of spiced fruit and honeysuckle. This full bodied Chardonnay is non-oaked in order to allow the wine to fully express it’s unique musqué characteristic.

A partially barrel fermented and barrel aged Chardonnay with pure varietal aroma and flavour. Château des Charmes Chardonnay possesses a pale, golden colour with a bouquet of citrus fruit, and a hint of apple. This is a premium quality Chardonnay at an affordable price.   Chardonnay, Estate Bottled V.Q.A.
This estate grown Chardonnay is barrel fermented and aged in 100% French Allier oak. Château des Charmes uses only highly prized oak barrels sourced from a single forest in France. The Estate Bottled Chardonnay is round, full bodied and very concentrated. Flavours of oak and butter make this dry, white wine a classic companion for most grilled foods.   Equuleus, Paul Bosc Estate Vineyard
The 2002 Equuleus is a classically styled blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc and 25% Merlot. Equuleus is only produced in exceptional vintages and is notable for its age worthiness and concentration. Aged for one year in French Tronçais and Allier oak barrels, Equuleus is rich and full bodied with flavours of cassis and dark chocolate. Equuleus is the name of the “Little Horse” constellation, best seen when it rises in the night sky at harvest time every September. This equine symbol celebrates Château des Charmes’ founder Paul Bosc’s passion for Egyptian Arabian horses which are at the Paul Bosc Estate, the family’s home vineyard. Ready to drink now, but will continue to develop in the bottle for 5-10 years.
  Gamay Droit, St. David's Bench Vineyard V.Q.A.
In 1982, Château des Charmes' founder Paul-Michel Bosc, while conducting pioneering clonal selection research at his vineyard in Niagara-on-the-Lake, noticed a single Gamay Noir vine that exhibited some interesting and unique characteristics. Most noticeably, the vine shoots grew in an upright ("droit") position. Propagation of this single vine began immediately and culminated almost two decades later in the granting of international Plant Breeder's Rights to Château des Charmes. "Canada's first vinifera" was born. Gamay Droit produces grapes that ripen on average about ten days later than Gamay Noir with higher sugar levels and greater colouring matters. The result is a red wine with more body, alcohol and flavour concentration.

Château des Charmes Gamay Noir is a medium-bodied, easy drinking red wine. It has a purplish red colour and a bouquet of cherry and berry fruit. The palate combines supple tannins and cherry flavours with a long, smooth finish. 2850 cases produced.
  Gewürztraminer, St. David's Bench Vineyard V.Q.A.
Château des Charmes Gewürztraminer, St. David's Bench Vineyard has a light gold colour with an exotic bouquet of tropical fruits and lychee spice. Smooth and rich with a distinctive and complex finish. This wine is very rare and is produced only in exceptional vintages.

Château des Charmes Late Harvest Riesling is a rich and flavourful dessert wine. Exuding aromas of citrus and tropical fruit, it is full and sweet on the palate with excellent balancing acidity.   Pinot Noir V.Q.A.
Château des Charmes Pinot Noir, is a smooth, full-flavoured red wine. It is aromatically complex and rich on the palate. Cherry flavours mix with traditional earthiness and finish with a black-pepper spice. This wine combines both quality and value and will continue to develop for a few years after bottling.
  Pinot Noir, Estate Bottled V.Q.A.
Produced in small lots from 100% estate-grown Pinot Noir grapes, this fine wine is vinified according to traditional Burgundian methods including aging in small Allier oak barrels. Ruby in colour, velvety smooth in the mouth with a complex and lingering cherry flavour.

Produced from 100% Riesling grapes and fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. The colour is light gold and the bouquet is floral with aromas of citrus fruit and lychee spice. On the palate the wine is lively and full flavoured with a refreshingly crisp finish. This wine makes an excellent aperitif and also matches well with seafood or spicier dishes such as Asian food. A five time gold medal winner at the annual Cellars of the World Competition.
  Riesling, Estate Bottled V.Q.A
Estate grown and bottled from grapes sourced exclusively from the Château’s own vineyards, this dry Riesling has a bright, light gold colour with pronounced lemon and lime aromas and mineral notes, fresh on the palate with a clean, lingering finish.
  Rosé, Cuvée d'Andrée V.Q.A.
The father and son winemaking duo, Paul Sr. and Pierre-Jean Bosc, dedicate this delightful new Rosé to Madame Andrée Bosc - wife, mother and winery matriarch. This fresh, crisp dry wine is an artful blend of Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc … noble grape varieties all. Made from red grapes yes - but styled like a white wine.

  Vidal Icewine
Château des Charmes Icewine is produced from 100% Vidal grapes and is a wonderfully sweet nectar fermented with wild yeasts. It exudes aromas of honey and apricots with a beautiful balance between fruit, sweetness and acidity. 2,370 cases produced. Harvested December 20, 2004, January 17, 2005.

Château des Charmes Viognier, St. David's Bench Vineyard is a rare vitis vinifera variety that originated in the Rhone region of France. It is a smooth, medium bodied aromatic wine with complex melon and citrus flavours on the palate with peach and almond aromatics.
