Willamette Valley Vineyards

Willamette Valley Vineyards Our goal is to make the highest quality Burgundian varietals from the Willamette Valley. As native Oregonians, we treasure our environment and use sustainable practices in growing and vinifying our winegrapes. Founder Jim Bernau purchased the land in 1983 and cleared away the old pioneer plum orchard hidden in scotch broom and blackberry vines. He planted Pinot noir (Pommard and Wadenswil clones), Chardonnay (Dijon and Espiguette) and Pinot gris. Numerous trips to classes at UC Davis and seminars from here to France sharpened his viticultural skills. In 1989 he gathered together hundreds of Oregon Wine Enthusiasts and took the company public. We were ready to build our dream--a world class winery in Willamette Valley--and make Burgundian varietals in sufficient quantities to be served and sold in the best restaurants and bottle shops in the world. The Estate Vineyard is located in the heart of the Willamette Valley Appellation with south and southwest facing slopes dropping from 750' in elevation to 500', allowing for the best summer sun and air circulation. Yields are low, with the Estate Pinot noir purposely limited to 1.75 tons per acre. In 1997 we purchased one of Oregon's oldest and most respected vineyards, Tualatin Estate, near Forest Grove. We have increased plantings with new roostocks and Dijon clones of Pinot noir (113, 114, 155, 667 and 777.) Both the Estate and Tualatin vineyards are certified Salmon Safe and LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology).

  Dijon Clone Chardonnay
A pretty, ripe and medium-bodied wine. Sweet aromas of overripe lemons, toast, pineapple, cream, vanilla and barrel spices. Mouthfilling, complex and forward flavors mirror the aromas with sweet impressions, well-integrated light barrel toast flavors and a thread of acidity throughout. Mouthfeel is medium- to heavier-bodied and coats the mouth with a creamy texture. The finish is long and fresh from acidity with vanilla and spicy lingering flavors.
  Pinot Gris
Our signature style is to add a touch of barrel fermeneted Auxerrois to the blend for that kiss of toast and a small percentage of Pinot Blanc for viscosity, while still focusing on the quintessential profile of the Pinot Gris grape." Bright, fruity, creamy style. Overt and pretty aromas of melon, honey, cream, pear, nutmeg, almond and flower. Soft and rich mouthfeel with generous flavors of pear, mineral, melon, cream and spice interwoven with well balanced acidity. The finish is vivid and long, with lingering cream, mineral and pear flavors.
  Pinot Noir
An elegant, supple and stylish wine. Vibrant aromas of black cherries, brown sugar, spices, rose petals, vanilla and typical ‘Pinot noir dust’. Initial spicy flavors of nutmeg and barrel toast with ripe flavors of strawberries and cherries and mineral overtones. The mouth feel is soft, round and warm in sensation with and almost sweet and juicy impression of ripe fruit. The finish is long with lingering flavors of spices, well integrated oak, ripe sweet tannins and good acidity.
  Pinot Noir - Estate
Firmer, structured style. Subtle aromas of earth and sweet bing cherries slowly open to yield smoky barrel spices, tea leaf and leather. Rich black plum flavors with firm but sweet tannins and a hint of tea, cardamom, pepper and earth. Medium to big bodied with good acidity which holds on for a long, elegant finish. Appealing now, but will further reward those who cellar this wine.
  Pinot Noir - Signature Cuvee
Complex, layered aromas of black cherry, celery seed, barrel toast, nutmeg, graham crackers, barrel spices and a warm sweet sensation. Flavors mirror aromas with oak barrel flavors of toast and spices which are well integrated into this big-structured wine. Ripe but youthful tannins (characteristics of the vineyard) which will soften with time. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy bodied with mouth coating flavors. Good overall balance of fruit, oak, extract and tannins. The finish is long and mouth coating with flavors of barrel toast, bacon fat, with good acid balance.
  Pinot Noir - Whole Cluster

  Riesling
A semi-sweet medium bodied Germanic styled wine. Vibrant aromas of peach, pineapple, citrus and honeysuckle flowers. The explosive mouth-filling flavors mirror the aromas with star fruit and as steely apple malic acidity giving a sweet-tart balance with the sweetness finishing clean and refreshing crisp, with a long mouth watering finish.
